Privacy Policy
The short version. StockIt has no account and no sign-in. Your pantry, shopping list, meal plans and the photos of your receipts stay on your phone. Receipts are read on the device, so the image and its text are never uploaded. Three things do leave your phone: a barcode you scan, an anonymous price report, and a request for the shared list of receipt abbreviations. There are no ads and no third-party analytics.
What stays on your device
Everything you build in StockIt is stored locally, in the app's own storage and SQLite database on the phone:
- Pantry items, quantities and whether each one is stocked, low or out
- Your shopping list, meal plans and saved meals
- Receipt photos you take or pick, and the text read from them
- Your own price history — what you paid, where and when
- Your settings, including the stores and city you choose
We cannot see, read or recover any of it. Deleting the app deletes it.
Receipt scanning happens on the phone
When you photograph a receipt, the text is recognised by an on-device text-recognition library (Google ML Kit, running locally — no network call). The lines are then matched against a database of Canadian grocery shorthand to work out which products they refer to. The photo is not sent to us, to an AI service, or to anyone else. It stays in the app on your phone until you remove it.
What leaves your device
Barcode lookups
When you scan a barcode, StockIt sends that barcode number to Open Food Facts, a public food-product database, to get the product name, brand, category and nutrition information. Only the barcode is sent. Nothing identifies you, and nothing else from your pantry is included.
Shared price reports
StockIt's point is to show you what groceries actually cost nearby, so prices recorded in the app are pooled. When a price is recorded, the app sends to our database:
- the item (its barcode or a normalised product name),
- the price,
- the store chain and its city and province — the chain and city, not a street address or a specific branch,
- the date and time of the report, and
- whether it came from a receipt scan or was entered by hand.
That is all. No name, no email, no account, no phone identifier, no home address, no receipt image, and nothing about the rest of your pantry. A price report cannot be traced back to you, which also means we cannot pick your reports out of the pool on request.
Price reports are stored in a hosted Postgres database (Supabase) and are kept so other shoppers can see recent prices; reports age out of the app's display as they get old.
The shared shorthand list
The app periodically downloads the shared list of receipt abbreviations and the product names they map to, so receipt scanning keeps improving. This is a download; nothing about you is sent with it.
What StockIt does not do
- No accounts, sign-in, email collection or passwords
- No advertising and no ad networks
- No third-party analytics or tracking tools, and no profiling
- No selling, renting or sharing of personal information
- No location tracking — the city used for prices is the one you pick in Settings
Permissions the app asks for
- Camera — to scan barcodes and photograph receipts. Images are processed on the device.
- Photo library — only so you can pick an existing receipt photo. StockIt reads the photo you choose, nothing else.
- Notifications — for reminders such as the weekend shopping-list nudge. These are scheduled by your phone; no content leaves it.
Children
StockIt is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.
Deleting your data
Because your data is on the device, deleting the app or using the reset option in Settings removes it. There is no server-side account for us to delete. Anonymous price reports already contributed stay in the shared pool, as they are not linked to you or to any identifier of yours.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version is posted at this address with a new date. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
